#1722: Ego Trip

Ah, that summer sauna has begun in NYC. Maybe it’s the heat or the extra exposed flesh but people here and around the world are starting to act a bit overconfident, even a little volatile.

Lots of big riffs and future guitar gods to reflect that bombast in this all-vinyl escapade.  It’s also the season for bands to hit the road, and this week features many groups that are currently on tour (The Well, Winstons, Salem’s Pot, Sam Kogon, Slow Season, Nopes).

Much love to all those folks out on the road and much love to all the folks having a tough time keeping a cool head.  Have a great week!

#1718: Melting Pot

It was a good week for vinyl but another messed up week in the world.

Nothing but wax this week, pulled from a ton of pre-orders arriving in the mail and a fun trip to the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair. New stuff from Riding Easy Records’ “Brown Acid” kicks it off, along with new releases from Hydromedusa, Sharkmuffin, and two from Greenway Records. Of course there’s also a nod to Chris Cornell’s untimely passing.  To top it all off there’s a hearty helping of soul and funk to heal your worried mind and move your worried hips.

Keep it weird.
Keep it loud.
Keep the faith, Manchester.

#1641: Volunteers

So many aspects of 2016 have been a punch in the gut, and as the year draws to a close there are some folks that warrant a respectful nod. This week’s all about dealing with it, with tunes to help you get through the madness. Nods to the late Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen, Leon Russell and Mose Allison plus others that have fallen. On the bright side there are some fresh Beyond Beyond is Beyond releases by Sam Kogon and Chocolat. Selections from the bands I’ll be supporting at the next Garageland event as well. Plus a variety of tunes to bang your head to in lieu of banging it against the wall.
We’ll make it through this year stronger than before. Hope this helps.

#1638: Hell On Wheels (Heavy Halloween Special)

Get out the greasepaint, squeeze into some leather and latex and get ready to bang your head this Halloween!

I’m a big fan of big riffs but don’t always get to go as heavy on the live show, but with Halloween on the horizon this episode is the exception.  Tune in for a 3 hour HEAVY special featuring vintage heavy blues & proto-metal and modern tracks ranging from blues to doom, all with riffage in mind!   And I couldn’t pay tribute to riffs down the ages without paying special tribute to Riding Easy Records so look out for a lot of their artists in today’s lineup.

#1635: Fresh Cream (feat. The Falling Birds)

Amid many shades of rock and the blues I welcome The Falling Birds back to the show today. We talk about their new EP, what it was like touring the UK, the bands they’re listening to, and our shared gig coming up at Good Room in Greenpoint (click for more info…)

#1633: Get Off

Started off with some smooth funk and soul this week, then a little softer with blues and folk building to an aural crescendo chock full of big riffs. Fresh tunes, vintage goodies and every trick in between.
New biz from Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, Thrill Jockey, Sunrise Ocean Bender, Riding Easy Records.
Go on, now. It’s all right.
Get off.

#1632: Commotion

Summer’s winding down, school’s back in session and I’m ready to make some noise! Lots of raucous vintage psych and classic rock this week plus all sorts of new loud stuff from all corners of my collection, including a peek at the new Brown Acid compliments of Riding Easy Records.

Attune to get back in the grind without losing your mind!

#1631: Coming Your Way

So much music and so little time!  Since we have an extra day in our weekend here in the U.S. I thought a three hour special was in order.  Focusing on mostly rock, with a special emphasis on new stuff from my favorite labels.  Along with the normal vintage fare, look out for treats from the Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, Stickman, Dizzybird, Stolen Body, Magnetic Eye, and Riding Easy imprints.  Covering all angles from breezy to heavy, it’s the perfect soundtrack for the discerning rocker basking in backyard leisure.  Have a great weekend, enjoy and share!

#1629: Get A Grip On Yourself

Nine weeks!  Nine weeks it’s been since I’ve been live in the studio, but it was just like riding a bike.  A glitchy, overheated bike.  But familiar, and fun, and good to be live with you all again.

Started out mellow and vintage with classic tracks and a nod to the late, great vibist Bobby Hutcherson. Then moved into modern with new Kikagaku Moyo, Amerikan Bear, Adrien Younge and some Os Noctambulos (a suggestion from my pal Poppa Horton.)

In the second hour it gets meatier, with a few releases from Riding Easy Records (Slow Season, Electric Citizen, Salem’s Pot) mixed with vintage rockers.  There’s even some White Mystery, Blondie, and Heaters in there, just to cover all the bases.

All in all, a great way to spend my morning and I hope a great listen whenever/wherever/whomever you are.  Have a great week and make sure to hit up the replay every Tuesday on AffinityRadio.net!

#1627: The Fear

Well, here we are.  Both major parties have their nominees and I think the nation is a little depressed about it’s choices.  An air of divisiveness is seeping in everywhere, and people are anxious and afraid.  In other words, this election is no fun at all.

You know what is fun?  This list of tunes.  I’m determined that no matter what direction we move in here in the States that I’m not gonna panic or let it overwhelm me.  All sorts of new and vintage tracks on deck to help out with that, including new releases from the Riding Easy and Beyond Beyond is Beyond imprints.

Fear is the mind killer, it’s said, so let’s rock out and drown out FEAR with NOISE.

Hang in there, we’re gonna be okay.

#1619: To Know Is Not To Be

A very mixed bag on tap this week. After last week’s non-stop funk block with TonyConquerrah I ended up with a lot of new psych and rock to sort through for this show. We have the normal vintage rock with new tracks featured from New Planet Trampoline, JuJu, Electric Citizen, Mother Feather, Mondo Drag, and The Myrrors.

Safe travels to the many bands hitting the road for the spring/summer, and think of wordlessly speeding down America’s highways as these tunes hit your ears.

Thanks for joining me, have a great week!

#1617: Wild & Confused

In a world that seems turned upside down (*cough cough Trump cough cough*) the only thing that settles my mind is sweet soul, psychedelia and heavy classic riffs.

Don’t worry, we’re gonna make it. We will, guys. Just stick together.

#1613: Waiting For The Sun

Life’s hard enough without it being gloomy all the time, but this spring in NYC has been cold, rainy and windy so far and I needed to clear my head.  So another 3 hour special was in order, filled with warm psych and a dash of soul and heavy riffs.

Along with the vintage fare keep your ears perked for new tracks from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Kikagaku Moyo, Mondo Drag, Amerikan Bear, New Planet Trampoline, local boys KDH and lots more.

Have a great week, spring’s on it’s way….?

#1610: Living, Breathing

There was just too much music this week, man. Fortunately the time opened up and here we are with 3 hours of hard vintage riffs, soaring psychedelic journeys and balls-to-the-wall rock and roll. Keep an ear out for new tracks from previous OTRRH guests Strange Majik and Mother Feather, a sneaky preview of a new release from Sunrise Ocean Bender, another toke from the new Mondo Drag, and nods to the legends Keith Emerson & George Martin who left this world in recent days. I promise you, this is one for the records books.

Tune in, turn on, trip out!  Full playlist here-> Continue reading #1610: Living, Breathing
