#1742: Mixed Up Mind

There’s a bit of a pop tinge to today’s show as we explore grey area and mixed messages. There’s a national conversation right now about what’s right and wrong and where the lines lay, and as usual I use sound to navigate. Explored via psychedelia, funk, indie, and alternative from all eras.
As Curtis Mayfield used to say, check out your mind.

#1740: I Hear Fake Voices

2017 isn’t over but I’ll be damned if there hasn’t been some great music so far. Here’s a bunch of tunes that came out this year to put you in the mindset of a truly modern human.
Strap in and take off!

#1739: Pounds Of Soul

Thanksgiving week is a busy time here in the U.S.  Lots of school events, family and friends visiting, travel and good lord the food prep. Here’s a lot of soul and funk, mostly vintage but some modern, with a sprig of psych and garage to keep it loud. Hope you have a great week, holiday or not!
Stay safe, stay weird!

#1737: I Ain’t No Miracle Worker (live from El Cortez, Bushwick)

Over the weekend I got the opportunity to provide some digital stimulation between bands as Freelance Fiends at the Safari Room at El Cortez. Without calling anyone out I’ll say there weren’t a lot of people out that night. So I hit “record” and what you’re hearing tonight is an amalgam of the three sets I did that night.

Regular listeners will hear a lot they’ve heard on this show before, including recently. And this mix is a bit thinner than it sounded over the great sound system at El Cortez. But overall I think it’s a fun set and a chill way to spend my Saturday night. Big thanks to Super Bueno for inviting me out. Enjoy and have a safe, rad week!

#1736: Too Many Creeps (Freelance Fiends Halloween special feat. Frank Ramos & Atom Heart Mutha)

The veil is thin between worlds and as a guide for souls on either side I’ve teamed up with my good pal Frank Ramos (https://www.mixcloud.com/frankramos1232/) and my fellow UK broadcast cohort Atom Heart Mutha (https://www.mixcloud.com/hrhatomheartmutha/) for a scary good Halloween special as the Freelance Fiends.
There’s some new stuff and some old stuff but the focus is providing mood music for your night’s wicked adventures.
Have fun. Stay safe. Get weird.

#1735: I May Care

Last week in my own life were child/school issues, an impending in-law visit and a late night Bushwick gig.  Here’s what’s left, mentally and aurally.  I do care, but it’s a tired caring.

Brand new tunes from Buffalo Killers, Birds, and some extended rockers for this bleary, blustery day in Brooklyn.

Next week’s episode airs an hour later in the U.S. thanks to daylight savings.  It’s a special Freelance Fiends Halloween episode featuring guest selectors Atom Heart Mutha and Frank from Vibrations In Sound!

#1734: Bronze Behavior

All-vinyl show this week!

It’s been a couple months. There’s dust on the mixer, my finger’s heavy on the FX knobs. I’m working out the kinks, trying out new things. Keeps you young.

I won’t be winning any gold medals for this one but you can hear fresh tunes from The Rubs, Buffalo Killers, All Them Witches, The Evil Usses, Bonehawk & JuJu. There’s also a heaping helping of vintage soul and rock to help stave off the weight of our world’s depravity.

I’ll be spinning vinyl as Freelance Fiend at El Cortez in Bushwick this Thurs 10/19. Come hang out if you like. Click the flier for more details…

The Rodent Hour with Sun Voyager on Radio Free Brooklyn

Brooklyn fuzz-rockers Sun Voyager rip it up tonight (Sat. 10/14) at Knitting Factory BK in support of the Swedish hard rock group Truck Fighters!

You should go.  I’m going.  Let’s meet up.

My pal Matt, host of the Rodent Hour on Radio Free Brooklyn, was kind enough to have me on his live show this past week to hang out with 2/3 of Sun Voyager and chat about the band’s first full-length in the works, our favorite Brooklyn bands, and of course Canadian Thanksgiving.  It was fun!  Have a listen before we all head to Knitting Factory tonight.

#1733: Pulled Up

It’s been a rough couple weeks with so much violence and hate spread across this country and the world.  Are we sliding toward the edge?  I don’t know, but I’ll do what I always do: try and provide some relief through music.

This week I have new tunes from Dustin Lovelis, Colemine Records, Heaters, Lost Kingdoms, Missiles Of October and more modern biz to keep you current alongside some real vintage gems.   And of course, a nod to the recently departed legend Tom Petty.

Take a minute to look around and if you see someone slipping, lend a hand and pull them up.

#1732: Wandering Soul

This show was finished before the events in Las Vegas this week, but the first half of the show is geared towards catharsis for rough times so I hope it helps if only in a small way.
Lots of vintage and new soul as a nod to the late, great Charles Bradley. Plus new tracks from All Them Witches, Chicano Batman, and NYC folks The Fluids and Ancient Ocean.
Keep trying to bring some love and light into the world.

#1731: Paradise For Sale

Such a mixed bag this week with nods to Marc Bolan’s being gone 40 years and the departures of Harry Dean Stanton and Husker Du’s Grant Hart, just as a start. Then settle in for sonic rumination on creativity, living in the now, planning for the future, and what love can do a person. Y’know, all the stuff songs are always about.
Dig in, trip out. Have a great week.

#1730: We’re Flyin’ High

Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, fires and a lot more is making this week hard for many out there. This week I try to keep it upbeat, with a nod to the late #HolgerCzukay of CAN and a new single from NYC’s own The Fluids. Some dad rock, some folk rock, some riff rock, funk and more to help you pull yourself outta the muck.
Have a badass week.

#1729: Mirror Of Illusion

The chatter in our information age feels intolerable.
On one hand, it brings to light issues that’ve been ignored for too long. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like our minds are meant to process information this fast. Who could blame you for feeling overwhelmed?

Much love to folks in Houston this week. Here are some tunes to stop thinking about things for a couple hours.

#1728: Even With The Pills

Feeling a little stressed?  The pills ain’t gonna help, not really.  Let’s get the aural fix.  The musical solution.

Among other things, we’ve got fresh releases from Dustin Lovelis, Beck, Queens of the Stone Age, Porno Wolves and some serious vintage riffery.

Good luck out there.  Keep your head up.
